22 COWS KILLED BY LIGHTNING IN SIKONGO

Wednesday, 14th October, 2026 | Sikongo, Western Province

Tragedy has befallen Luwe Village in Sikongo District, where 22 head of cattle were killed after being struck by lightning on Monday, 12th October, 2026.

The devastating incident has left four families in anguish, having lost their livestock — their primary source of livelihood and economic backbone.

Among the most affected is the Village Headman of Mukubi Village, Induna Richard Namushi Muwana, who alone lost ten cows in the disaster.

Speaking with a heavy heart, Induna Muwana said the loss has shattered him, as cattle rearing was his main source of income which he used to sustain his family and educate his children.

He revealed that this is not the first time tragedy has struck his kraal in such a manner, recalling that he lost 25 cows in a similar lightning incident in 2015.

He has since made a heartfelt appeal to the government to urgently intervene and come to the aid of the affected families.

Meanwhile, Sikongo District Commissioner, Mr. Henry Mwalye Imbuwa, has assured the affected families that the matter will be escalated to the relevant authorities, including the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), to ensure that necessary assistance is rendered.
